Intersil pushes high-performance laser diode driver for automotive head-up displays

December 17, 2020

On June 1, 2016, Intersil, a leading provider of innovative power management and precision analog solutions, announced the launch of the ISL78365 laser diode driver for automotive head-up display (HUD) systems. This highly integrated device drives up to 750mA of maximum current from four high-intensity laser diodes for projecting full-HD color video onto the windshield, with currents close to two of the competitor's solutions. Times. The ISL78365's higher current and faster switching speeds enable HUDs to achieve high resolution, high color depth and high frame rate projection.

The Laser HUD is the latest innovation in the field of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The car's HUD system projects speed, warning signals and other critical vehicle and navigation information onto the windshield in the driver's line of sight, helping the driver to focus on the road and ensure safe driving. The new generation of augmented reality laser HUDs offer near-zero latency and a wide field of view. They can also overlay more real-time information such as traffic signs and projected steering lanes, virtually marking arrows and markings on the road ahead, making the navigation direction clear and easy to follow.

The four-channel ISL78365 is a complete solution for driving lasers in scanning MEMS laser projection systems used in next-generation vehicles. It is the industry's only four-channel laser driver that supports a wide range of laser diode configurations, enabling system designers to achieve the required intensity and clear, rich colors with high contrast. The ISL78365 offers rise and fall times of less than 1.5 nanoseconds, and its switching speed is faster than that of competing devices, enabling high frame rate HD color video. In addition, the device offers 10-bit color and 10-bit scaling to support the wide range of contrast levels required for each driver channel. At the same time, its flexible synchronous parallel video interface supports a maximum pixel frequency of 150MHz or 1900 pixels per line.

The ISL78365's dynamic power management features optimize the laser diode supply and provide three power-saving modes to increase efficiency and reduce power dissipation to meet system cooling requirements. Programmable multiphase return-to-zero (RTZ) function reduces speckle, and the device's wettable flank QFN package facilitates integration into a compact laser projection HUD system.

Philip Chesley, senior vice president of precision products at Intersil, said: "The ISL78365 offers near-perfect HUD solutions to automotive manufacturers, both in terms of resolution, color depth and frame rate. Our feature-rich laser diode drivers can be used to size the system. Minimize and minimize complexity while delivering significantly higher performance than competing products."
